In a case of art imitating life, Barry’s later years saw him working as a taxi driver, with only a part in 1993’s ‘The Mystery of Edwin Drood’ coming his way.

Evans next foray into television came in 1982, when he landed a recurring role in Dick Emery’s Private-Eye comedy series ‘Legacy of Murder’. A big hit, the show lasted three seasons between 19. These pupils were portrayed stereotypically, and included a sexy Swedish blonde (Anna Bergman), and a flirty French brunette (Françoise Pascal). The 1977 communication-problem comedy ‘Mind Your Language’, saw Barry as likable English teacher Jeremy Brown, teaching evening classes to various foreign students. Not escaping from sex comedies, Barry also starred in the equally bawdy ‘Under the Doctor’ (’76), before landing the television role for which he is most remembered for.

The movie did well enough to spawn a couple of sequels, both (thankfully?) without Evans. A big hit, this tired comedy at least saw Barry reunited with his ‘Mulberry Bush’ co-stars Judy Geeson, Adrienne Posta and Angela Scoular. Coming hot on the heels of the hugely successful ‘Confessions of a Window Cleaner’, this saucy farce had Evan’s cabbie Joe North, picking up various fares as well as bored, sex-starved housewives.

Swithin’s Hospital, and follows both his and his colleague’s exploits of chasing jobs and various women.Īfter the series ended, Barry found work hard to find, and after a couple of brief TV bits, he was cast in Stanley Long’s sex comedy ‘Adventures of a Taxi Driver’. Luckily, he was able to reprise his winning role of Michael Upton, in the 1971 follow-up series “Doctor in the House”, this time as a newly qualified GP at St. After the series ended, Evans took the lead role in Pete Walker’s dreary thriller ‘Die Screaming Marianne’ (’71), opposite Susan George. He starred alongside Robin Nedwell and George Layton in the hugely popular comedy series “Doctor in the House” (’69), as medical student Michael Upton. The success of ‘Mulberry Bush’ did not lead to big movie roles for Evans, who instead found subsequent fame in television. The film was a big hit, helped in no small part by the popular soundtrack by Spencer Davis and Traffic, and the brief barrier-breaking nudity. The large female supporting cast included excellent turns by Vanessa Howard and Angela Scoular, as Jamie’s potential girlfriends, and Judy Geeson as the one he falls in love with. This enjoyable swinging-sixties comedy-drama, about a sixth-former on a quest to lose his virginity, was an ideal screen debut for Evan’s, who gives an honest, good-natured performance, sometimes addressing the camera like an inexperienced ‘Alfie’. After brief parts in a few TV series, Evan’s won the role of Jamie McGregor, in Clive Donner’s instant cult hit ‘Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush’ (’68). He showed an early interest for acting, and in his teens attended the Italia Conti Academy in London, before winning a scholarship to the famed Central School of Speech and Drama. He may not have been a great actor, but he was however very natural, and his friendly persona has endeared him to many people over the years.īorn in Surrey, on June 18th, 1943, Evans was abandoned as a baby, and grew up in an orphanage. Although he would never be regarded as one of British cinemas leading actors, from the late Sixties until the early Eighties, the cheerful and extremely amiable Barry Evans was very popular in both television and cinema.
